There are many open mics in the greater Boston area. One of my favorites is the Roslindale Open Mic. Hosted by Mike Delaney, this open mic is held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at The Roslindale Congregation Church, 25 Cummnins Highway, Roslindale, Mass.
This venue has been operating for nearly two years now and has attracted performers of all ages and skills. Long-time Roslindale resident Neal Braverman had the idea to bring music back to Roslindale after the cancellation of the music program at Emack & Bolio’s in Roslindale Square a few years ago. Neal made arrangements with the congregation church and asked local veteran musician and former Java Jo’s Jamaica Plain open mic host Mike Delaney to host the venue.
The ‘Rozzy Open Mic’ (nicknamed ROM) has quickly become one of the most popular places for singer-songwriters and musicians to perform in Boston. Sign up begins at 6 pm for random spots which start at 7 pm and spots are scheduled around a featured performer every session.
There is no cover charge and a hat or basket is passed to collect for the feature. Refreshments are often provided by Neal, Mike and others and there are baskets for volunteer donations to contribute for refreshments and to the church for the use of the performance room.
Steve Friedman of Melville Park Studio in Hyde Park is a regular on the premises, and performers can purchase recordings of their songs from Steve.
There is a very warm community atmosphere at Rozzy which makes each evening there enjoyable. ROM has been a standout and welcome addition to the Massachusetts music community.
